Justice Kennedy is my Hero

June 29, 2015

Well, you didn’t think Friday’s seminal Supreme Court decision would go by without me commenting! Coming just one day after the Glaukos IPO, the 5-4 decision making same-sex marriage the law of the land gave me a “1-2 high” the likes of which I have rarely experienced. And strangely, the fact that I was in prison during these momentous events in my life did not detract from the joy they brought me! Part of the reason for this is that several of my Glaukos colleagues kept me informed as things unfolded and sent me pictures which made me feel I was part of the process! And with regard to the Supreme Court decision, when I called my HUSBAND on Friday evening, he happened to be celebrating the decision with all of our closest friends. He immediately put me on speaker so we could “celebrate” together and I got to say hi to each of them individually. This past weekend, a lot of guys kept asking, “why are you smiling so much?” 🙂 I have also been pleasantly surprised by the reaction of other inmates. I have heard nothing negative and several came up to me and said, “congratulations!” That is something I would not have expected a few months ago.

Back to the title though. I am in awe of Justice Kennedy and of all the people who have fought for this basic civil right for so many years. When Kenny and I became a couple in 1983, this was not even a dream. What a great day for us and for the United States!

Hopefully soon Congress will take the last major step which is to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). In 29 states, it is still perfectly legal to fire someone because he or she is gay. This surprises many people and a large majority in the US think this needs to be changed.

OK, off my soapbox now. Thanks as always for listening. And thanks to our many friends over these many years who have been fiercely supportive of our relationship. You know who you are and we thank you with all of our hearts. Public opinion made a huge difference in what happened on Friday.

David
