Coming up on nine months here at the Taft Prison Camp. It feels like I have been here a very long time and yet the time also seems to have gone by fairly quickly. I know that seems like a contradiction but that’s how it feels to me! It’s not like I’m forgetting what it is like in the “real world” but it somehow seems distant. And yet I haven’t quite hit the 25% mark in terms of the minimum time I will have to spend in prison. So that sequence of thoughts can be a tiny bit depressing if I allow myself to go down that path too often. So I choose not to! That is one of the interesting things about the mind; you can actually tell it what to do.

Keeping busy has certainly been one of the things that has made the time seem to pass quickly. That is more important than ever now that my job requires fewer hours than previous jobs I have held. The main additions to my previous schedule have been yoga and tennis. I know; this is where Kenny rolls his eyes and says, “I’m working harder at Lowe’s than I have ever worked in my life and my husband is spending his days doing yoga and playing tennis!” Well, technically that is true! But of course I would trade it all in a second to have the opportunity to integrate back into, and contribute to, the community. But in the mean time, yoga has been great for my lower back and for quieting my mind and tennis is just plain old fun!

I am also helping a handful of inmates out with their marketing and business plans. I am inspired by inmates who are actively planning for success upon their release. Even for very talented people who have had a lot of success in the past, it is difficult to make a living once you are a felon. As long as employment applications include the question, “Have you ever been convicted of a felony?” that will continue to be the case. So entrepreneurship is often a good route upon release and I am glad to be able to help where I can. It fits well with my intention to put as much positive energy into the universe as I can with no expectation of anything in return plus it helps to keep my mind sharp!

Of course, I am also continuing with my daily workouts, my writing and – happily – lots of correspondence via JPay and letters. It is so wonderful to have so many people joining me on my journey. And just typing that last sentence makes me smile! 🙂 I am truly grateful for all of you!
