David Applegate

My name is David Applegate. I am 59 and am a native Californian currently residing in Palm Springs with my husband and partner of 34 years. I served 34 months at the federal prison camps at Taft, CA and Sheridan, OR and was released on November 28, 2017. I am now on supervised release. I had a very successful career in sales and marketing in several medical device categories. While running a business unit at a growing mid-sized public company, I – along with several others – succumbed to the pressure of meeting Wall Street expectations and engaged in channel stuffing. It seemed to be manageable and fairly innocuous in the beginning but it was a slippery slope that resulted in a large restatement of revenue and earnings. I acknowledge my role in the conspiracy and I take full responsibility for my actions and the harm they caused others. Although difficult, going to prison was the best possible thing that could have happened to me. I have changed my priorities, identified my irrational thinking errors and developed tools to recognize them when they occur. I hope what I have learned – and will learn – will be helpful to others.

Diminishing Returns?

Diminishing Returns? May 5, 2016 You may (or may not) have noticed that I have not been posting as often. This is primarily due I think to the law of diminishing returns. My primary goal for my "camp sabbatical" was personal growth. As with nearly all goals, the...

Finding Your Purpose

Finding Your Purpose April 22, 2016 I recently received a book that reminded me of a class I took last year (thanks for sending Diane Calcaterra!) called Finding Your Purpose. The class was taught by a fellow inmate and covered a lot of ground about how to get the...

Networking In Prison???

Networking In Prison??? April 7, 2016 Before I get started on this post, it has come to my attention that two of my recent posts went out in the same email and that most people missed the second one. It contained my first "published" poem and here is the link if you...

Not All Fun and Games

Not All Fun and Games March 30, 2016 I managed to go over 14 months without getting sick here. Sure, a few sniffles and coughs here and there; but nothing I would have stayed home from work for. Well, everything good I suppose eventually comes to an end and it has...

Movin’ on Down!

Movin' on Down! March 17, 2016 Yep, you read that headline correctly. I know that typically one would prefer to be movin' on up in life (a la George and Weezie) but I'm happy to be movin' on down; to a lower bunk that is! In all real estate, it is location, location,...

Spring Is Here!

Spring is here! March 12, 2016 The past several days have been amazing. Temps have been in the 70s and El Nino storms have brought some of the clearest skies I have seen since I have been here -- to a part of the country that has some of the highest levels of air...

Are We Blinded by Capitalism?

Are We Blinded by Capitalism? March 4, 2016 This seems like an odd question coming from someone who has an MBA from Berkeley and a long career in the business world and has clearly benefited from capitalism. As you are probably aware, one of the movies nominated for...

Don’t Worry, Be Happy!

Don't Worry, Be Happy! February 23, 2016 In order to survive and thrive in prison camp, there are a few philosophies I try and follow. Among them: choose to be happy (or at least content) and try and find the positive in every situation. These philosophies are based...

Busy Busy Busy!

Busy busy busy! February 17, 2016 One of the keys to "success" in prison is to stay busy and I have certainly taken that advice to heart; while still leaving time for reflection of course! 🙂 I often get questions from friends on JPay email as to what my days are like...

*Trans* formation

February 10, 2016 Don't worry! I am not on my way to becoming the Caitlyn Jenner of Taft prison camp! The reason I have selected this topic is that I am frequently asked by friends which books I am reading and which I would recommend. Having the time to read whatever...
