Happy Birthday Kenny!!!

June 5, 2016

Today my husband turns 60! I am so grateful that he came to visit yesterday along with our long time and close friends Lisa, Gary and John (of Ed and John, Ed’s in Italy right now immersed in Italian language school). It was a truly wonderful visit and Kenny looks damn good – for 60 or otherwise! But I must admit, Kenny’s 60th is a little bittersweet for me. It’s another of those milestone events that have occurred while I am locked away. As much as I try not to, it’s hard not to feel a little helpless. I can’t help but think about his last big birthday – his “double nickel” (55th). Along with Howard and Sherri, we celebrated that milestone in Croatia. I loved planning that trip and it was one of our best trips – and favorite places – ever. And as much as I tried not to think about it, it was really killing me to not be able to do anything special for his 60th. As I pondered this, I found it to be an incredbily humbling experience. Kenny, naturally, has been wonderful about it saying he doesn’t mind at all; it’s just another day.

The bottom line is that I have to deal with “what is” and the best I could do was to send him a handmade birthday card with I poem I wrote for the occasion. I did put my heart and soul (and all my love!) into the poem and the accompanying inscription. Sadly, it did not arrive in time for his birthday. Everything I have sent him so far has gotten to him in two days so I sent this one four days in advance. Oh well, it will get there when it is ready to get there!

I did come up with one other “gift” I could give him. Of course, we are not allowed to take anything in with us to the visitation room (we can’t even wear our watches). So I surprised him by shaving off my beard. It’s the first time I have shaved it off since I first arrived here back in January of last year.

I am very happy that John is throwing a birthday pool party for Kenny today at his and Ed’s house. It kills me that I can’t be there but my heart is with you all day, Mr. Ken! And just wait until you see what I do for you on your 65th!!!
