Perhaps one of the most valuable things I’ve learned while in prison that will help me not only in my career but in every day life is the ability to connect with people on a personal level.

I’ve always been a people person. but being in prison has allowed me to hone my public relations skills to a whole new level. In prison you will come across people from all walks of life: drug dealers, gangsters, multi-millionaires, and entrepreneurs like me. And the interactions you have will be different with all of them.

Now sure, all these types of people exist on the outside. The difference is I live with each and every one of them. With many of these men being far different from me and honestly some being pretty intimidating, I’ve truly learned the value of “not judging a book by its cover”.

I have found one way or another to find a common ground and connect with many of these men with whom I have nothing in common.

It has forced me to set my visual judgments aside and actually get to know the person behind the façade. After being in prison I feel I can connect with anyone, no matter who they are or what they have done.

After all, we’re all just human.
