David Applegate

My name is David Applegate. I am 59 and am a native Californian currently residing in Palm Springs with my husband and partner of 34 years. I served 34 months at the federal prison camps at Taft, CA and Sheridan, OR and was released on November 28, 2017. I am now on supervised release. I had a very successful career in sales and marketing in several medical device categories. While running a business unit at a growing mid-sized public company, I – along with several others – succumbed to the pressure of meeting Wall Street expectations and engaged in channel stuffing. It seemed to be manageable and fairly innocuous in the beginning but it was a slippery slope that resulted in a large restatement of revenue and earnings. I acknowledge my role in the conspiracy and I take full responsibility for my actions and the harm they caused others. Although difficult, going to prison was the best possible thing that could have happened to me. I have changed my priorities, identified my irrational thinking errors and developed tools to recognize them when they occur. I hope what I have learned – and will learn – will be helpful to others.

A Fable to Live By

One day, while walking through the wilderness, a man encountered a vicious tiger. He ran for his life, and the tiger gave chase. The man came to the edge of a cliff, and the tiger was almost upon him. Having no choice, he held on to a vine with both hands and climbed...

Getting Closer

Getting Closer January 24, 2016 I have noticed over the past few months that my relationships with several people I am close to have become signficantly deeper and richer. I find this to be a wonderful thing and I was curious to figure out why this has happened. In my...

Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year!! January 2, 2016 What a year it has been! On the one hand, it seems like it wasn't that long ago Kenny and I were having our last dinner together at Lisa and Gary's; and my last dinner as a free man. On the other hand, that seems like an incredibly...

Merry Christmas Darling

Merry Christmas Darling December 24, 2015 Dear Mr. Ken: Even though my head is in a good place this holiday season, it's still hard to wrap it around not being with you tonight and tomorrow -- like we have been for over 30 years. I'm not with you in person but my...

The Amazing Mr. Ken

I hope you will indulge me taking up a blog post to brag a little bit on my husband, Kenny. Like me, he is on a difficult journey and I think sometimes people forget that! For quite some time prior to my sentencing in August of last year, we knew that it was highly...

Karma Delivers!

Karma Delivers! December 7, 2015 One of my key "intentions" I have adopted here at Taft is to do good things without expecting anything in return or, if you prefer, putting "good energy" or "karma" out into the universe. And no, Shirley MacLaine is not hovering above...

I Am Truly Thankful

Is It Time for Christmas?

Is It Time for Christmas? Yes, I know it isn't even Thanksgiving yet. In my previous life, I used to be the "Christmas Music Nazi" insisting that Kenny had to wait until after Thanksgiving every year to get out his 200+ Christmas CDs and start playing them (Kenny...

Being Gay in Federal Prison Camp

When I knew I would be heading to a federal prison camp, I began researching the internet on the closest Federal Prison Camps to Palm Springs (Lompoc and Taft). Unfortunately, TripAdvisor and Yelp do not have ratings for prison camps. Probably no way to monetize that....
