Typical Day As A Federal Prisoner
Prior to reporting to prison, Justin Paperny and I had several long conversations about life "inside". We discussed how many prisoners simply become numb, watch television all day and try to sleep away the remaining time on their sentences. With each wasted day, these folks reduce their chances to return to the real world as a productive citizen. Justin suggested I employ a different strategy. He suggested that prison should be a place where we realign our moral compass to a "true north" heading and use our time to prepare for our post prison life.
Justin preached reading, writing, and exercise as the proper way to do time. Justin also emphasized maintaining and expanding your remaining network of friends to assist with your reentry to the real world. I am following Justin's advice and here is a look at my typical day:
7:00 wake up- make instant coffee, watch CNN news
7:30 Library-check emails, type blog, study for class
8:30 Track - jog 3 miles, push ups, sit ups, and weight work
10:00 Shower, Reading
11:00 Lunch
11:30 Computer class
12:30 work detail (12 cents an hour)
2:30 Work on blog and book outline
4:00 standing count in Cubicle
4:30 dinner
5:00 Track- walk 1-2 miles
6:00 practice in computer lab for class
7:15 Library- check emails, send emails, work on book outline
8:30 Reading, watch 15 minutes of sports center
10:00 standing Count in Cubicle
10:10 Lights Out
My goal is to be ready to be a productive citizen as soon as I am able to return to the real world!
