First Week Review
This has certainly been a very interesting week in my life, a complete learning experience, the lessons are striking and subtle, simple and profound and enlightening, all at the same time.
One of the first lessons is possibly the profoundest, the resiliency of the human spirit and the ability to cope, how most of the men make the best of a less than good situation. This past weekend, watching and listening and partaking in all of the activities that the men concocted was unbelievable. The sounds of enjoyment, of camaraderie of laughter and fun, all while we’re here in prison. It was a positive indication that when you put you mind to things you can accomplish just about anything. I have met some extraordinary and who have been here for over 3 or 4 years and are not bitter, but are hopeful and positive and joyous. Men who understand what they need to do to get through this, remarkable. for me this is so encouraging and supportive. The camaraderie of most, the friendship of most, the extending of help, of support, I could not of gotten through this first week with out it.
This is most positive to hear. I know the human spirit is tough as “nails.” Throughout my almost 40 years of working w/ children who have handicapping conditions, I have witnessed the most incredible grit and determination anyone would expect from individuals who are “normal”
Once the dust settles, you should be ready for phase two- a re entry plan back to life as we know it. You know that might just be a flaw in our society. You get out of school or a training gig and we just throw ourselves out to the world. Actually having time to plan, role play, and create one’s personal parameters might just be a positive you take away from this very challenging situation. Go for it!
