I am told that the BOP has not reviewed the pay standard for prisoners for over 40 years, this is what I'm told, it might be longer, but it certainly not shorter. The current pay to prisoners ranges from 12 cents and hour to 25 cents an hour here at my camp, it might be different at other work camps but not by much. From what I understand the rates that the BOP gets paid for inmate labor ranges from $15 to $25 an hour. I'm sure that the economic model the BOP uses this makes sense, how could it not, to profit over 1300% and more on labor has to work. But with regards to basic human rights in spite of being imprisoned how does the home of the free and the brave and equal rights for all and laws against indentured servitude justify this model? I don't think they can, but more importantly they do not have to. Now this has been going on for years and hundreds of thousands of prisoners have passed through the system, millions in fact and it seems to be a dirty little secret that is rarely if ever discussed in "civilian society", why?
