Brrrr, it was refreshingly cold this morning here at Camp Fed. Finally, we have some seasonal weather. My morning walk at 6:30 today was in the low 30s and a brisk prevailing wind from the west made it feel cooler the thermometer read. I absolutely love it. I enjoy exercising in the cold; it's more invigorating and energizing, for me. The other great benefit to this sudden burst of frigid air is that it kept all of my fellow inmates inside. I had the track and back compound all to myself. Walking around the track watching the sunrise was a pleasure, the quiet and the solitude is something that is rarer than a flawless 10 carat diamond in here and to me, worth just as much. The opportunity to exercise and think and actually hear my own thoughts was a luxury I very rarely get. In spite of the burning cheeks, the runny nose and eyes and the freezing hands I stayed out for over an hour and a half and relished in my peace and solitude. This was actually the first time since I have been here to experience the feeling, it was really, really nice. If this is the portent of things to come when it gets cooler I welcome it with open arms. However, I doubt this will be the case, I fear as soon as my fellow inmates adjust to the change they too will be out in the cold enjoying the seasonal weather with me. Enjoy it while I can and look forward to some more, it's really the little things that count.

Dear Mark,
Of course for our winters, 30 degrees means putting the sheets up on the plants to keep them from freezing. It is amazing how the giant saguaro cactus can handle the freezing temperatures, but that is thanks to all the water that it can hold inside its straw-like wooden infrastructure. We even get the rare dusting of snow, although it’s more likely to get that above the 4,000 ‘ range in the mountains (our tallest peak is over 9,000’. And, if the El Nino ocean currents prove true to the predictions we’ll be getting a lot of rain this season. Interesting how global climate change may bring more water to the desert, as it brings both heat and arctic blasts to the Midwest and East and more climate change denying to the voices if Republican presidential candidates. Well, enjoy the rest of the days and the end of the month.
With love,
Sol and Jan
