I recently read an article in New York Magazine regarding the assortment of germs, Microbes, virus and bacteria that thrive on the New York City Subway, especially on the hand rails and poles. Along with the story the author posted pictures of Petri dishes he cultivated from sample he took on al the subway lines, color coding the dishes to match the colors of the lines that the MTA assigns. It was a very interesting article and it made me think of what is living here at Camp Fed. It's probably cleaner on the NYC Subways. The subways are not a closed environment that we have here, they are better ventilated, newer, better maintained and people are not living in them 24/7. Here at Camp Fed we are closely confined, together sharing the same facilities, whether we're sick or healthy, we are here. Needless to say when one of us gets sick it spreads like wild fire. Colds and viruses are endemic, poor hygiene and cleaning routines just makes it that much worse. I realize that it's difficult to maintain a modicum of cleanliness, especially when many of the inmates to not bother to pitch in and help, but it could be better, much, much better. What amazes me is that with all that I have said many more of us don't come down with some major stuff, it's been said that we have built up an immunity to a lot of it being that we live it 24/7, I would prefer it if it were cleaner.
