Happy Birthday to my handsome son! I am sorry that my poor choices prevent me from sharing this day with you. I know you have been through allot over the past several years. Your brother's illness and death gravely affected all of us. My crime has drastically changed your life. You have lost your home, your community and the security of your family. I cannot change the past. I can only make sure that I do better in the future.
On your birthday, I want you to know how proud I am to call you my son. You are going to college and working two jobs to support yourself. Many people would have thrown in the towel in light of all that has transpired. Instead, you stepped up and showed all of us how strong you really are. I cannot buy you a fancy present for your birthday from prison. I can offer you a gift that I have grown to truly appreciate inside this place. I can assure you that not a day goes by without my thoughts turning to you. I can tell you that I pray for your safety, happiness and success every single evening. These gifts are hard to see but they are very important.
I know that I have caused you shame and embarrassment. You can rest assured that it will never happen again.
