I read an article concerning GM and the settlement they reached with the US Southern District concerning their ongoing case about the faulty ignitions in their Saturns and other vehicles.  The US Attorney General for the Southern District, Peet Bahara, was very proud of announcing that GM would pay $900 Million in fines and $600Million in restitution to the families who lost loved ones and had injuries.  It stuck me that this is a very bad joke being perpetrated on our people, GM has admitted to knowing about the problem, for over 10 years, for covering up the problem and for totally ignoring driver and passenger safety, over 100 people lost their lives because of this cover up, to me this is murder, yet no executive at GM is being held accountable for their part in the cover up and blatant disregard for the law and their customers safety.  GM is buying their way out of this whole situation, what is $1.5 Billion to them, a drop in the bucket and then they will probably write the entire thing off on their taxes.  This is such a terrible injustice, for the families that have suffered losses and for the justice system.

What is more baffling to me is that there does not seem to be any kind of public outrage, any kind of cry from the populace that here is another example of Corporate America riding rough shod over out supposed justice system.  Another example how if the company is big enough and connected enough no one is held accountable.  Lives were lost due to a series of cover-ups and omissions by GM, and these were intentional and the key executives that were there and are still there continue to draw immense salaries and benefits and basically laugh at the system that is here to supposedly protect us from these kinds of abuses.
