I was speaking with one of my fellow inmates this morning about self discipline, moderation and how certain of us spend our time and what we do to take care of our bodies and minds while we're incarcerated. He is a very intelligent gentleman who I enjoy speaking with and he asked me this question: "What is the most valuable thing I own?" I ran the question over in my mind for a few seconds and was about to answer when he said, "It's your body, that's the most valuable thing you own."
I pondered his answer for a second and realized that he was correct. We then discussed what a mess many of us make of our bodies, between over eating, drinking, smoking, drugs, bad habits, lack of exercise, the list is endless. He then mentioned if we took care of some our prized possessions as we do our own bodies we would be dumbfounded. His example was a fine Mercedes, would we put the wrong fuel in it, would we run without oil, wound we vomit on the interior, would we fill it with trash? The list could go on and the possessions could vary but it does comeback to how we treat our most valuable possession. I realize that I need to do a better job of taking care of my own and while he and I were talking I vowed to myself that I will not put back the 30+ plus pounds I've lost, I will not forgo the daily exercise and I will maintain my body as best as i can. Another good lesson from prison.
