Irrational?

When someone acts in a foolish manner (commits a crime), they have acted in a irrational fashion. Irrational is defined as "lacking the power to reason; meaningless, unreasonable". Irrational thoughts lead to irrational acts. I have learned a method to deal with irrational thoughts. The method allows you to check yourself to see if what you are planning to do is rational.

The method is called the Five Rules of Rational Thinking. In order for your thoughts to be deemed rational, you must be able to answer three of the following five questions in an affirmative manner.

  1. Are my thoughts based upon objective reality?

  1. Are my thoughts helping to protect my health and or life?

  1. Are my thoughts helping me achieve my short and long term goals?

  1. Are my thoughts keeping me out of conflict with others?

  1. Are my thoughts leading me to feel the way I want to feel?

The rules of rational thinking help me to act in a rational fashion. The next time you are faced with a difficult choice, apply the rules of rational thinking to your situation. It will help you make a rational choice.

If I had used the rules of rational thinking in the past, I suspect I would not be writing this blog from Federal Prison?
