It’s an overcast Sunday morning and I didn’t wake up until 8 a.m.; even though I went to bed at 9:15 last night. I do always seem to be extra tired after having a visit. Yesterday was with my brother Paul, my sister-in-law Nicole and my nephew Aaron. Aaron usually has to work on weekends so it was really great that he was able to come!
So why the melancholy? Well, I was watching CBS This Morning and one of the segments was an overview of the movies that are being released between now and the end of the year. What an amazing slate! It reminded me of how much I love seeing all the great movies with Kenny the last couple of months of the year. It’s one of our favorite holiday traditions! Some we will see in the theater but — thanks to a friend who is a SAG member and who shall remain anonymous — some we will get to see at home! So I am melancholy because it’s a reminder of another part of our lives that Kenny and I will miss out on. I love watching movies with Kenny — that shared experience after having been together so long. It’s one of the things I miss the most.
We do get movies here: two on Friday evening and two on Saturday evening. Although every once in a while there is one I want to see, most are not interesting. The typical film is Fast and Furious 23 – or whatever number they are on. Plus, we are limited to movies that are rated PG-13 or lower. Even when there is a good movie though, it is somewhat of a bittersweet experience because I’m not watching it with Kenny. To use an overused analogy, it feels sometimes like I am living in a black and white world and the full color world is out of reach.
After CBS This Morning, they had Bernie Sanders on one of the “talking heads” shows and they showed a clip of Larry David doing his impression of Bernie from last night’s SNL. OH MY! It was spot on and completely hilarious! Right up there with Tina Fey doing Sarah (remember when we first saw that in Italy, H & S?). Kenny would always record SNL on the DVR and then we would go through it on Sunday morning to see what we missed. So we would have been guffawing at Larry this morning! So yes, I laughed out loud but then I was sad because I couldn’t share it with Kenny.
So I know my posts are usually upbeat and positive but sometimes I’m just sad and that’s OK too. So go see a movie between now and year end with someone you love!
All my best,
David
