Karma Delivers!

December 7, 2015

One of my key "intentions" I have adopted here at Taft is to do good things without expecting anything in return or, if you prefer, putting "good energy" or "karma" out into the universe. And no, Shirley MacLaine is not hovering above me and whispering in my ear at the moment.

But I think it is working because they added bacon to the commissary list and I didn't even ask for it (although I admit I did meditate on it a little bit). I am sure this sounds strange to all of you who can basically have whatever food you want whenever you want. I knew I would miss lots of foods while I was here (ribeye, sushi, mmmmm) but I didn't expect to miss bacon so much. Now granted, it's not applewood smoked, thick cut bacon from Whole Foods but after a year with no bacon, it's great! It's that pre-cooked bacon that you heat up for 20 seconds in the microwave and let me tell you, it makes for a great bacon, tomato, avocado and cheese sandwich!!!! Ah, I was in heaven!

And while we are on food, I must say that the camp went all out on the Thanksgiving meal. The COs (correctional officers) who run the kitchen staff along with the kitchen workers went all out to make sure we had a great meal. They actually took real white meat turkey and put each inmate's portion into an individual baggie. This kept the turkey really moist and yummy while it was being kept warm. They also made stuffing, yams, green beans and mashed potatoes with gravy. It was all great. And we even had pumpkin pie and fresh fluffy rolls! I am a traditionalist when it comes to Thanksgiving so I was in hog heaven. I was completely full and very appreciative of the effort.

And this past weekend was a lovely one capped off with the Sinatra 100th birthday special last night. Frank Sinatra is my favorite artist of all time so I was really hoping that we could watch the special last night. We have an inmate in our dorm who puts up the schedule every day for each TV monitor (I would not want THAT job!) and he granted my request. So all is good in my world. I did think some of the choices were a bit odd but it was two hours of Frank so no complaining here!

I hope you all are enjoying the holiday season! I was asked to join the carolling group in our dorm so I am getting in the spirit! We actually sound pretty good. There are some great singers here who are really good at harmonizing!

Lots of hugs to all of you!

David
